HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth had a pair of chances in the early stages of the contest but was unable to put a shot on net. Suffolk's first attempt of the night came in the 21st minute where West denied freshman Erik Van Even (Marlborough, Mass.) in the 21st minute of play. The Rams put another shot on net in the 24th minute where West came up with his second stop of the half.
  • Seniors John Dauphin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Eddie Smith (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) each had shots on net in the 24th and 31st minutes, respectively, however, were unable to find the back of the net thanks to a pair of saves from senior keeper Alfredo Serrano Figueora (Madrid, Spain).
  • The Leopards finally broke through in the 40th minute, thanks to Gosselin's first tally of the night. A Suffolk foul gave the Black & Gold a direct kick from 25 yards out. Gosselin put home the attempt to the top right corner for his 10th goal of the season.
  • In the 58th minute, Suffolk had a pair of chances when graduate student Nigel Leo (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) took a shot that was blocked. He gained control of the rebound, however, put the second chance opportunity wide.
  • Senior Jomar Martins nearly put the hosts ahead 2-0 in the 62 minutes when his shot was stopped by a diving Serrano Figueroa and sent out of bounds. Martins had a chance off the ensuing corner kick, however, the attempt went wide.
  • Wentworth continued to pressure offensively and put shots on net in the 70th and 71st minutes of play but couldn't come up with a goal. Suffolk countered in the 78th minute when Leo hit the crossbar off a free kick and the rebound attempt by freshman TJ Maselek (Sutton, Mass.) was saved by West.
  • A foul on the Rams inside the box led to a penalty kick for the Leopards. Gosselin stepped to the spot and put home his 11th goal of the season with 2:50 remaining to ice the game. It was also his program-record fifth made penalty kick (in five attempts).
  • With the win Wentworth reached the 10-win mark for the second straight season and the fifth time in the last six seasons.

THE SERIES:

  • Tonight marked the 13th all-time meeting between the two teams. Winners of the last four series meetings, Wentworth leads 7-4-2. This was the first-ever postseason meeting between the two teams.

NEXT UP:

  • Wentworth (10-9-0) advances to the CCC quarterfinals and will travel to second-seeded Roger Williams on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Suffolk ends its season with an 8-9-1 record.
