HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Roger Williams had an early chance when junior Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) put a header on net, which was saved by senior Robbie West (Weymouth, Mass.) in the second minute. In the 13th minute, Wentworth had its first chance on a shot by senior John Dauphin (Yorba Linda, Calif.), which was saved by sophomore Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.).
  • The Hawks had a direct kick just outside the box to set up a scoring chance in the 13th minute. The shot was blocked and the rebound was sent wide, ending the threat. In the 22nd minute, senior Nathan Gosselin (Hudson, N.H.) had a shot from in front, which was saved by Avellar.
  • Wentworth had four shot attempts in a four-and-a-half-minute span, which included a header by senior Eddie Smith (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) off a corner kick that went just high.
  • After a pair of Roger Williams shot attempts were blocked, the Hawks gained possession off a turnover in the 42nd minute and brought the ball low to the left side. Sophomore Matt Bagley (Trumbull, Conn.) sent a cross from low on the left side of the box to Miller who one-timed a shot inside the right post at 41:52.
  • A corner kick in the 65th minute was sent into the box by Dauphin. With the right side of the net open, Smith just missed connecting on a goal to tie the game. In the 67th minute, the hosts nearly went ahead, 2-0, as they had a two-on-one. Beltran's attempt was saved by a sliding West, who came out to play the ball.
  • Senior Juan Cedeno (North Andover, Mass.) tied the game for the Black & Gold with 16:11 left. Senior Jomar Martins (Braintree, Mass.) had a throw-in deep in Roger Williams' territory. Martins got the ball to senior Erik Treble (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) who sent a short pass to Smith. Smith flicked it to Cedeno who tapped the shot in.
  • In the 79th minute, Beltran put a shot on net, which was saved by West. The rebound came out to senior Jack Wetzel (Northport, N.Y.) who put a shot on an open net. Senior Alex Moore (Salem, Conn.) stepped in and headed the ball out to keep the game tied.
  • Miller gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead when he scored his second of the game, coming with 5:11 left as he took the ball away from a Wentworth defender just inside the box and dribbled through, putting a shot home to the lower left.
  • Wentworth had one last chance coming in the 89th minute when Cedeno put a shot towards the net, however, it went wide.
  • West made four saves for Wentworth while Avellar made five for Roger Williams. Shots were even at 14 and Wentworth had a 5-2 advantage in corners.

THE SERIES:

  • Today marked the 41st all-time meeting between the two teams with Roger Williams holding a 21-16-4 advantage. It was also the second straight (2019, 2021) season the two teams have met in the postseason and the ninth-ever postseason meeting. All-time in the playoffs the series is tied 4-4-1.
