Western New England Rallies to Edge Men's Soccer

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Mike Milazzo's (Old Lyme, Conn.) goal with 4:34 left in the second overtime capped off three unanswered goals as the Western New England University men's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-2, in the regular-season finale for both squads.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth struck first, scoring at the 10:05 mark when freshman Jaedon Costa (North Providence, R.I.) sent a pass along the sideline to senior John Dauphin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) Dauphine fed classmate Nathan Gosselin (Hudson, N.H.) who put home his ninth of the season.
  • Dauphin had a shot attempt in the 13th minute, however, it went wide of the net. At the 15:44 mark, he scored off a free kick from 25 yards out.
  • Western New England put four shots on net in the first half, however, senior Robbie West (Weymouth, Mass.) came up with four saves. After 45 minutes of play, Wentworth had a 12-5 shot advantage, including putting six shots on frame.
  • Early in the second half, the Leopards had three corner kicks in a span of 42 seconds, however were unable to generate any scoring chances. Costa and senior TJ Prouty (Glendora, Calif.) each had shots in the 64th minute but were unable to increases the host's lead.
  • The Golden Bears finally broke through at the 75:01 mark when senior Sean O'Neill (Belchertown, Mass.) scored off a throw-in from classmate Larsen Keys (Norfolk, Mass.). Western New England tied the game nearly two and a half minutes later when Keys scored from O'Neill and sophomore Mailk Serriser (Ludlow, Mass.).
  • In the 88th and 90th minutes of play, Wentworth had corner kicks, which resulted in offensive chances. Senior Eddie Smith (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) had a shot go wide at 87:36, while senior Alex Moore (Salem, Conn.) had his bid blocked with 24 seconds left.
  • The first overtime saw Wentworth take four of the five shots, with all four going on net. Freshman Colin Waltsak (East Longmeadow, Mass.) made four saves, including a pair from close range.
  • Western New England took a pair of corner kicks early in the second overtime, with the second one resulting in a wide shot attempt. At 105:26, senior Connor Mullins (Norfolk, Mass.) gained control of a loose ball and found Milazzo, who netted the golden goal.

THE SERIES:

  • Tonight marked the 17th all-time meeting between the two teams. Western New England has won three in a row and holds a 14-2-1 series advantage.
