Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match in Home Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – A well-balanced attack for the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team led the team to a 3-0 sweep over Colby-Sawyer Saturday morning before the team fell to Massachusetts Institute of Technology by a 3-1 score in the afternoon. The win against Colby-Sawyer gives the Leopards an unblemished 3-0 record in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After Colby-Sawyer notched the first point of the match, freshman Mason Andrade (North Kingstown, R.I.) notched a kill to tie the score at one. After the Chargers took a 3-1 lead, the Leopards sprung back, with a kill from freshman Gabe Tucker (East Greenbush, N.Y.) giving the hosts a 5-4 lead. Three kills from sophomore Alek Reymond (Chittenango, N.Y.) and a kill by freshman Brayden Green (Lake Worth, Fl.) eventually gave Wentworth a 16-6 lead. Kills by Andrade and sophomore Nick Cebula (West Springfield, Mass.) gave the Leopards a 25-12 set win, marking a 1-0 match lead.
  • Three kills from Andrade and a kill from sophomore Dave Arellanes (North Aurora, Ill.) sprung Wentworth into a 5-0 lead to start the second set. After Colby-Sawyer came within three at 5-3, the Chargers never got any closer, going down 8-2 on two-straight aces by Andrade. Arellanes notched two aces to extend the Leopards lead to 16-6. Cebula and Arellanes garnered more kills en route to a 22-10 lead for the Leopards just before the Black & Gold took the set 25-11 off of two-straight aces by Andrade.
  • Wentworth kicked off the final set with a 6-0 lead, with three aces coming from sophomore Josh Milke (Eastampton, N.J.). Wentworth carried their lead to 10-3 on aces from Andrade. Kills by Reymond and Cebula combined with errors to extend the Leopards lead to 21-9. Errors eventually gave Wentworth a 25-13 set win, notching a 3-0 match win.

  • Wentworth has won all six meetings between the two teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth held a 3-2 lead early in the first set with kills coming from freshman Nicolai Bell (Moraga, Calif.), sophomore Sam Etter (Massillon, Ohio) and senior Hunter Oshman (Pennington, N.J.). Down 7-6, the Leopards tied the score at seven-all. The two teams stayed neck-and-neck until the Leopards pulled away to a 22-19 lead thanks to kills by Bell, Etter, and Oshman. However, MIT came back to force a 25-25 tie and eventually took the first set 27-25, marking a 1-0 lead for the Engineers.
  • The two teams traded points to start the second set, marking a 4-4 score, until MIT set out to a 7-4 lead. Building up the score, the Engineers extended their lead to 14-10, 16-11, and 17-12. A kill by Bell closed the margin to four at 17-13. The Engineers continued to hold their lead, working the score into their favor, until they claimed a 25-21 set win off of two Leopards' errors, giving the visitors a 2-0 match lead.
  • MIT started the third set with a 4-1 lead before a kill by Etter cut the deficit to two at 4-2. Down 8-4, a kill by junior Jacob Waga (East Northport, N.Y.) cut the deficit to three at 8-5. MIT held their lead to a 14-13 score until a kill by freshman Matthew Zegowitz (Westford, Mass.) tied the score at 14 apiece. Wentworth eventually separated themselves in a 21-18 score off of a kill by Bell. A kill by Oshman and an error gave Wentworth a 25-22 win in the third set, marking a 2-1 match deficit for the Leopards.
  • The visitors started the fourth set with a 5-2 lead until errors and an Oshman ace eventually tied the score at 7-7. Down 11-10, Wentworth tied things back up with a Bell kill. MIT tried to pull away from an even score that held throughout the set, however, Etter notched two kills in three plays to bring Wentworth close at 24-22. Errors let the Leopards tie the score at 24 apiece until one final kill after an error gave the Engineers a 26-24 set win, giving the visitors a 3-1 match victory.


THE SERIES:

  • MIT owns the all-time series advantage, 37-5.

  • The Black & Gold are in idle until Saturday when they visit SUNY New Paltz for a tri-match against the Hawks (3:00 p.m.) and Stevens (1:00 p.m.).
