#14 Men's Volleyball Breezes Past Emerson, Colby-Sawyer, Extends Win Streak to 14

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team (18-6, 11-0 GNAC) continued their undefeated stretch in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play, sweeping Emerson (8-11, 5-5 GNAC) and Colby-Sawyer (2-15, 0-8 GNAC) behind balanced attacks. The two wins also extended the Leopards' current win streak to 14 matches.

 
MATCH ONE: WENTWORTH 3, EMERSON 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After falling behind to the Lions 3-0 in the first set, a kill by freshman Nicolai Bell (Moraga, Calif.) got the Leopards on the board at 3-1. Down 4-1, a stretch of kills from senior Colin Stockton (Hummelstown, Pa.), senior Hunter Oshman (Pennington, N.J.), and junior Jacob LaBouliere (Pipersville, Pa.) got the Leopards ahead 6-4. After a LaBouliere kill marked a 7-5 lead, two-straight kills from sophomore Sam Etter (Massillon, Ohio) extended the advantage to 9-5. Wentworth continued their lead to 16-10 after two-straight kills from LaBouliere before kills from Oshman, LaBouliere, Bell, and sophomore Josh Milke (Eastampton, N.J.) helped the Leopards snag a 25-20 first set win.
  • After two-straight kills from freshman Benjamin Moughon (Mercer Island, Wash.) gave the Leopards a 2-1 advantage in the second set, a pair of service aces by junior Tyler Jack (San Jose, Calif.) combined with Lions' errors gave Wentworth a commanding 6-1 lead. Wentworth stretched the lead to 12-2 with the help of kills from Moughon and sophomore Dave Arellanes (North Aurora, Ill.) before a slight push back from the Lions brought the score to 12-6. Consecutive kills from Oshman, Jack, and sophomore Alek Reymond (Chittenango, N.Y.) continued the Leopards' lead to 16-9 before another string of three-straight kills from Arellanes, Moughon, and senior Tristan McDonough (Shelton, Conn.) marked a 22-13 score. Kills from Jack and Moughon guided the Leopards to a 25-16 second set win and a 2-0 match edge.
  • Two Moughon kills helped the Leopards set out to a 3-1 lead in the third set before two service aces from McDonough helped push the advantage to 6-1. Kills by Moughon later marked 7-2 and 8-3 scores before a push back by the Lions was capped by a Jack kill, marking a 9-6 score. Kills from Moughon and freshman Brayden Green (Lake Worth, Fla.) helped carry Wentworth's lead to 15-9 before errors and kills by Moughon and  junior Jacob Waga (East Northport, N.Y.) marked a 21-11 score. Two kills from Jack and another by McDonough and Waga each earned the Leopards a 25-17 set win and a 3-0 match win.

MATCH TWO: WENTWORTH 3, COLBY-SAWYER 0


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After an even 2-2 score started the first set, a kill by sophomore Nick Cebula (West Springfield, Mass.) put the Leopards ahead by one. After two service aces by Waga extended the lead to 5-2, two kills by Reymond brought the score to 8-4. Kills from Waga and Cebula helped carry Wentworth's lead to 14-7 until a kill by freshman Gabe Tucker (East Greenbush, N.Y.) marked a 15-8 score. A slew of errors for Colby-Sawyer combined with kills from Waga and Cebula gave Wentworth a 25-14 first set win.
  • Wentworth set out to a 4-1 lead in the second set with two kills coming from sophomore Antonio Marino (California, Md.). Kills from Marino and Cebula combined with two service aces from Tucker carried Wentworth's lead to an 11-3 score before kills from Tucker, Reymond, Cebula, and freshman Mason Andrade (North Kingstown, R.I.) raised the score to 16-7. Kills from Cebula and Tucker brought the Leopards' lead to 20-9 before kills from Oshman, Reymond, and Marino guided the Leopards to a 25-16 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
  • After squandering off to a 4-2 lead, an Andrade kill marked a 5-2 lead early into the third set. After a slew of Colby-Sawyer errors, kills from Tucker and Andrade stretched Wentworth's lead to 10-5. After a pair of service aces and a slew of more errors for the opposition, a kill by Marino and a service ace by Andrade marked a 19-8 advantage for the Black & Gold. Two kills from Marino, one from Cebula, and a final service ace from Tucker grabbed the Leopards a 25-10 set win, ending the match in Wentworth's favor by sweep.


SERIES NOTES:

  • The Leopards remain unbeaten by Colby-Sawyer all-time, holding a 7-0 record.
