Men's Volleyball Rolls Over Emerson

BOSTON, Mass. – A balanced attack by the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team was more than enough to handle the Emerson Lions, giving the Leopards a 3-0 match win in GNAC action Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Leopards kicked off the first set with a 2-0 lead thanks to kills from sophomore Sam Etter (Massillon, Ohio) and freshman Nicolai Bell (Moraga, Calif.). The Lions came back to take a 4-3 lead before a kill by freshman Matthew Zegowitz (Westford, Mass.) tied the match at 4-all. The two teams traded points, with Wentworth holding a 10-8 lead thanks to two kills by Bell. Two-straight kills from Etter extended the lead to 12-9. After a slew of errors for the Lions, a kill by Etter and an ace by freshman Brayden Green (Lake Worth, Fla.) gave the hosts a commanding 18-12. A kill by senior Hunter Oshman (Pennington, N.J.) brought the score to 21-16 before the Leopards snagged a 25-17 set win, giving them a 1-0 match lead.
  • The two teams traded points to work the score up to 6-4 before two-straight kills from Zegowitz marked an 8-4 lead. After the Lions battled to a 10-7 score, junior Jacob Waga (East Northport, N.Y.) notched a kill to mark an 11-7 match. A collection of kills by Green, Etter, Oshman, and Zegowitz gave the Leopards a 17-9 lead. A pair of kills by sophomore Dave Arellanes (North Aurora, Ill.) helped the hosts get a 20-12 advantage before a Zegowtiz kill secured a 25-14 set win for the Leopards.
  • The hosts got out to a 3-0 lead in the third set thanks to an Arellanes kill before a Bell kill secured a 4-1 lead. A slew of kills from Waga and junior Tyler Jack (San Jose, Calif.) helped the hosts hold a 7-4 lead before working the score to 13-5. Two kills from Arellanes along with kills from Etter and Bell extended the Leopards' lead to 18-6. A kill by Waga after a handful of errors for the Lions secured the Leopards with a 25-10 set win, earning the Leopards a 3-0 match win.

 

THE SERIES:

  • The Leopards own the all-time series, 23-2, with their last loss to the Lions dating back to 2013.
