Win Streak Hits Eight For Men's Volleyball

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team (12-6) continued its winning ways into Friday, sweeping New Jersey City (8-6) and Misericordia (10-17) to push their win streak to eight behind a balanced attack throughout the day.

 
MATCH ONE: WENTWORTH 3, NEW JERSEY CITY 0


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The two teams started the first set neck-and-neck, as the Leopards earned points on kills from sophomore Sam Etter (Massillon, Ohio) and junior Jacob LaBouliere (Pipersville, Pa.) to mark a 2-2 score. A kill by senior Tristan McDonough (Shelton, Conn.) later put the visitors ahead 4-3 and two kills by senior Hunter Oshman helped the team get separation in a 12-6 advantage. Back-to-back kills from freshman Nicolai Bell (Moraga, Calif.) and sophomore Josh Milke (Eastampton, N.J.) continued the score to 14-7. Wentworth held the sizeable lead for the remainder of the match, as kills by Bell, sophomore Dave Arellanes (North Aurora, Ill.), and freshman Benjamin Moughon (Mercer Island, Wash.) helped the Leopards grab a 1-0 match advantage on a 25-18 set win.
  • Behind 4-1 to start the second set, the Leopards got kills from LaBouliere and Oshman to cut the deficit to 4-3. A kill by LaBouliere gave Wentworth their first lead of the set at 5-4 shortly after. Three-straight kills from Etter followed by a LaBouliere strike stretched the Leopards' lead to 12-8. A kill by junior Jacob Waga (East Northport, N.Y.) continued the lead to 15-10 before three kills by Etter sandwiched kills by Arellanes and McDonough, earning the Leopards a 25-17 set win.
  • Kills by Bell and junior Tyler Jack (San Jose, Calif.) got Wentworth off to a 2-0 advantage to start the third set. Gaining separation off of errors, the lead stretched with two straight kills by LaBouliere helping in a 12-6 score. A second kill for sophomore Alek Reymond (Chittenango, N.Y.) helped bring the Leopards' lead to 14-9 before two-straight from Arellanes and another from Moughon stretched the lead to 21-11. After a slight push back, a kill by Waga helped the Leopards take the third set, 25-17, earning them their seventh-straight win.


SERIES NOTES:

  • Wentworth owns the all-time series, 8-5, and have won four-straight between the two squads.



MATCH TWO: WENTWORTH 3, MISERICORDIA 0



HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth got out to a 3-1 advantage in the first set with kills from Etter (2) and Oshman on the board. After a push back from their opponent, the Leopards' held an 9-4 lead off of errors and a LaBouliere kill. The Black & Gold never look back, eventually carrying their advantage to a 20-10 score before two kills from LaBouliere sandwiched a kill by senior Colin Stockton (Hummelstown, Pa.) and earned the Leopards a 25-14 set win and a 1-0 match lead.
  • The Leopards got out to quick 4-1 and 5-2 leads in the second set and eventually carried the score to 10-6 on errors. After traded points worked in Misericordia's favor, an Oshman kill solidified a 16-11 lead. Wentworth continued to stretch their lead off of kills from Oshman, LaBouliere, Stockton, and Milke, earning themselves a 25-18 set win and a 2-0 match edge.
  • After Misericordia held a narrow lead for the start of the third set, a LaBouliere kill gave Wentworth a 5-4 lead. Another LaBouliere kill and a service ace from freshman Gabe Tucker (East Greenbush, N.Y.) pushed the Leopards' lead to 7-4. Kills by Oshman and Bell helped the Leopards' outpace their opponent to a 15-7 score before an Arellanes kill marked an 18-12 score. Errors sank most of the later going of the set, while the Leopards' earned a match win (25-18 set win) off of a kill by Reymond.


SERIES NOTES:

  • Today marked the first-ever matchup between the two teams.
