#12 Men's Volleyball Continues Record-Breaking Slate, Sweeping Dean and Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Sweeping Dean (3-17, 0-12 GNAC) and Elms (4-21, 3-9 GNAC) Saturday, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team (21-6, 13-0 GNAC) continued their record-breaking slate.

With the two wins, the Leopards' surpassed the previous program-high win streak of 15 matches as the 2023 team has now won 17 matches in a row. Wentworth also surpassed the 20-match win mark for the second-straight season and the ninth time overall with eight of the nine seasons coming with head coach Evin Giglio at the helm.

 
MATCH ONE: WENTWORTH 3, DEAN 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A kill by sophomore Nick Cebula (West Springfield, Mass.) brought Wentworth's lead to 2-1 at the start of the first set. Two service aces by freshman Benjamin Moughon (Mercer Island, Wash.) and a kill by freshman Mason Andrade (North Kingstown, R.I.) continued the lead to 4-2 before two kills from freshman Gabe Tucker (East Greenbush, N.Y.) helped guide Wentworth's advantage to 8-2. Another Andrade kill pushed the lead to 13-4 before a Moughon kill marked a 16-4 score. The Leopards cruised o a 25-10 set win, marking a 1-0 match lead.
  • With the Bulldogs ahead 4-2 in the second set, a kill by sophomore Alek Reymond (Chittenango, N.Y.) cut the deficit to 4-3. With Dean ahead later by a 7-5 score, two kills from Andrade marked a tie at seven-all. Junior Anthony Krzykowski (Feeding Hills, Mass.) notched three-straight service aces to mark an 11-7 lead before a cluster of kills from freshman Brayden Green (Lake Worth, Fla.) helped push the lead to 17-10. Two Krzykowski kills marked a 19-11 score kills from a variety of Leopards gave the Black & Gold a 25-15 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
  • Wentworth set out to a quick 4-1 lead in the third set with kills from Tucker, Krzykowski, and Reymond helping. Krzykowski and Cebula kills pushed the lead to 8-3 before a slew of kills by Green helped mount the lead at 13-5. Another Green kill marked a 18-6 advantage before kills from Tucker, Reymond, and Krzykowski gave the Leopards a 25-10 set win and a 3-0 match sweep.

MATCH TWO: WENTWORTH 3, ELMS 0


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After the hosts set out to a 2-0 lead, a kill by junior Tyler Jack (San Jose, Calif.) got Wentworth on the board. Elms owned a 5-2 lead that was cut into with kills by sophomore Sam Etter (Massillon, Ohio) and sophomore Dave Arellanes (North Aurora, Ill.), marking a 6-5 deficit. A kill by Jack later knotted the set at 9-9 before two kills from senior Tristan McDonough (Shelton, Conn.) pushed a lead for Wentworth to 13-10. After some traded points, a kill by freshman Nicolai Bell (Moraga, Calif.) marked a 19-15 score. Kills by Bell, Etter, and Jack later snagged the Leopards a 25-18 set win and a 1-0 match lead.
  • A Moughon kill set Wentworth out to a 2-1 lead before kills by Moughon later marked 3-2, 4-3, 5-3, and 6-4 leads for the Leopards. Two kills from Etter spread across play marked a 10-7 lead before kills by Moughon and Bell extended the lead to 13-10. The Black & Gold cruised the rest of the set, as Moughon, Etter, Jack, and McDonough helped the team grab a 25-12 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
  • Kills by McDonough and Etter helped push a Wentworth lead to 4-1 at the start of the third set. Kills by Moughon and Bell guided the Leopards' lead to 7-3 before Jack struck two service aces to mark a 13-3 lead. An Arellanes kill carried the lead to 16-4 and a cluster of kills from the hosts combined with a variety of kills from the Leopards' gave the Black & Gold a 25-13 set win and a 3-0 match win.


SERIES NOTES:

  • The Leopards own a 17-4 all-time record against Elms, with their last loss dating back to 2012.
