Men's Tennis Opens Season with Win at Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Daniel Gallegos (Monterey, Mexico), sophomore Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.), and freshman Rene Rodriguez (Doral, Fla) each picked up two wins as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's team opened its season with a 6-3 win at Rhode Island College (0-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Rhode Island College picked up the first point of the match, coming at No. 3 doubles as sophomore Andrew Fanning (Greenville, R.I.) teamed with classmate Brady Tupper (Pascoag, R.I.) to defeat Wentworth freshmen Thomas Kot (Farmington, Conn.) and James Weete (Dover, N.H.), 8-3.
  • Wentworth took the other two doubles points, starting at No. 2 when Marwaha teamed with Rodriguez for an 8-2 win over sophomores Elijah Gouin (Glocester, R.I.) and Zach Siemmao (Wakefield, R.I.). At No. 1, Gallegos and freshman Eric Doraci (Natick, Mass.) were 8-4 winners over junior Jack Cadden (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and junior Josh Brien (Johnston, R.I.).
  • The Anchormen tied the match at 2-all when Siemmao defeated Doraci at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2 before Gallegos gave the Leopards a 3-2 lead when he won at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2, over Cadden. Rodriguez gave Wentworth a 4-2 lead when he won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1, over Gouin.
  • Fanning cut the lead to 4-3 when he picked up a 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 10-1 win over senior Owen Conlon (Cataument, Mass.) at No. 5. Marwaha clinched the match for the Black & Gold with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 over Brien, while senior Kevin Sheilds (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was a 6-0, 6-7 (2-7), 10-5 winner over Tupper at No. 6
