Fast Start Lifts Men's Tennis to Win at USJ

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Paced by a sweep of doubles play, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team picked up a big win on the road, defeating the University of St. Joseph (Conn.), 6-3. With the win the Leopards improve to 3-9 on the season while the Blue Jays fall to 6-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) teamed with freshman Rene Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over freshman Noah Rivera (Armonk, N.Y.) and freshman Ryan Boucher (Bedford, N.H.). No. 2 doubles saw senior Kevin Shields (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.) defeat freshman Marko Karpyuk (Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine) and freshman Patrick Gavyrlchuk (Middletown, Conn.). Freshman Eric Doraci (Natick, Mass.) and Thomas Kot (Farmington, Conn.) completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over junior Tyler Hussey (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and freshman Evan Haskins (Sutton, Mass.).
  • USJ picked up its first point of the match at No. 6 singles when freshman Brett Hodas (East Berlin, Conn.) was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Kot. The Leopards made it 4-1 when Doraci defeated Gavyrlchuk, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 and Rodriguez clinched the match for the Black & Gold with a 6-3, 6-2 win over sophomore Jonathan Huot (South Windsor, Conn.).
  • Gallegos was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Rivera at No. 1, while Hussey defeated freshman James Weete (Dover, N.H.) at No. 5, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Karpyuk was a 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 winner over Marwaha at No. 2.
