Fast Start Lifts Men's Tennis Past Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Paced by a sweep of doubles play, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team (2-7) raced out to a 5-0 lead and defeated Bridgewater State (0-1), 5-4, in a non-conference match on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) teamed with freshman Rene Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) to give Wentworth a 1-0 lead with an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles over senior Kendan Ziegler (Hadley, N.Y.) and senior Chales Fiske (Taunton, Mass.). No. 3 doubles saw the Black & Gold take a 2-0 lead when freshmen Thomas Kot (Farmington, Conn.) and Eric Doraci (Natick, Mass.) combined for an 8-5 win over sophomore Matthew Krampf (and sophomore Charles Malinowski (East Bridgewater, Mass.).
  • The Leopards completed the sweep with an 8-7 (2) as senior Kevin Shields (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.) were victorious over graduate student Sean Nutter (Mattapoisett, Mass.)
  • Momentum continued for Wentworth heading into singles play as the Leopards picked up the first two points to clinch the match. Gallegos was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Ziegler at No. 1, while Rodriguez collected a 6-4, 6-0 win over freshman Adam Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) at No. 3.
  • At No. 5, Bridgewater State picked up its first point as sophomore Matthew Krampf (Littleton, Mass.) was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over senior Owen Conlon (Cataumet, Mass.). Nutter defeated Marwaha, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2, Fiske was a 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 winner over Doraci at No. 4, and freshman Tyler Barros (Somerset, Mass.) won, 2-6, 6-4, 10-3, over freshman James Weete (Dover, N.H.) at No. 6
