Men's Tennis Picks up Second Straight Win

WINCHESTER, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team ran its win streak to two matches on Thursday night as the Leopards (4-9) defeated the University of Massachusetts Boston (0-3), 8-1, in non-conference action at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • UMass Boston defaulted No. 3 doubles, which gave Wentworth a 1-0 lead. The Leopards built on their lead, making the score 2-0 as senior Owen Conlon (Cataumet, Mass.) and freshman James Weete (Dover, N.H.) were 8-2 winners at No. 2 over sophomore Melvin Nina (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore Felix Nguyen (Winchester, Mass.). The Beacons picked up a point at No. 1 when junior Patrick Ramos (American Canyon, Calif.) and freshman Maxwell Dill (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) were 8-6 winners over senior Kevin Shields (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.).
  • At the start of singles play, UMass Boston defaulted No. 5 and No. 6, putting the Black & Gold on the brink of clinching the match, 4-1. Freshman Thomas Kot (Farmington, Conn.) provided the clinching point when he won at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1, over Nguyen.
  • Freshman Rene Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) defeated Dill at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0, freshman Eric Doraci (Natick, Mass.) was a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 winner over Nina at No.3, while Junior Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) defeated Ramos at No. 1, 6-3, 7-5. In the second set, Gallegos rallied from a 5-2 deficit for the win.
