Men's Tennis Doubles up Salve Regina for Third Straight Win

NEWPORT, R.I. – Sophomore Pranav Marwaha's (Nashua, N.H.) three-set win at No. 2 singles clinched the match as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team doubled up Salve Regina, 6-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Sunday afternoon.

With the win the Leopards notch their third straight win to improve to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in CCC play. The Seahawks fall to 3-3 (2-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Salve Regina took a 1-0 lead when Alex Colon and Ned Barstone teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat senior Kevin Shields (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Marwaha. Wentworth tied the match at 1-all after junior Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) and freshman Rene Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5 win over Sam Middleton and Jake Foulise. The Leopards emerged from doubles play with a 2-1 lead when freshmen Thomas Kot (Farmington, Conn.) and Eric Doraci (Natick, Mass.) were 8-7 (7-3) winners over Jack Cooper and Josh Kamp.
  • Freshman James Weete gave Wentworth a 3-1 lead when he defeated Sam Johnson, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. However, Barstone defeated Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 and Cooper was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Kot at No. 5 to even the match at 3-all.
  • Gallegos gave Wentworth the lead back when he picked up a 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 1, before Marwaha's clinching win at No. 2. Marwaha dropped the first set, 2-6, but bounced back to win the next two, 6-1, 6-3. Doraci gave the Black & Gold a 6-3 advantage with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 4.
